Thesis Defenses Continue – Croft Senior Thesis Defense presentations are going very well this year, and we have many more coming up this week. Come to the Croft BBQ! – All Croft Faculty, Students and Staff are invited to attend the year-end BBQ on the veranda Monday, May 5th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. This is our last Croft event of the year, and a great time to let off steam before/during finals. If you plan to attend, please pick up BBQ tickets (free, but necessary) from Mrs. Evelyn in the Croft Office by 5 p.m. Thursday, May 1st so that we have plenty of food for everyone. See you there!

3 Croft Students Win Distinguished Taylor Medal – 3 Croft students were recently honored with one of the University’s most distinguished awards – The Taylor Medal. Susan Lawrence, Megan Rogers, and Anthony Yuen were among the 46 Ole Miss students awarded Taylor Medals on Honors Day, April 3. The Marcus Elvis Taylor Memorial was founded in 1904 in memory of the late Dr. Marcus Elvis Taylor, an honored alumnus of the University of the class of 1871. The Taylor Medal has become the most prestigious award given at The University of Mississippi, and we are so proud to have Anthony, Megan, and Susan among them.
Congrats to the Model UN team! Our Model UN team once again represented the University and Croft proudly, traveling to New York City this past weekend to participate at National Model United Nations at the UN. Our team, Christina Thompson, Alecia Waite, Eddie Smith, Jessica Beck, Brandon Russell, Dustin Bankston, Kurt Smith, Nick Wilson, mary Erin Callahan, John Denver, Rachel Johnson and Cooper Reves received the award for Distinguished Delegation for their portrayal of the country of Iraq. Good job, team!
Croft Freshman and Incoming Student Honored with IIPP Fellowships – Freshman Kyra McDonald and incoming student Deneaus Polk were recently named fellows by The United Negro College Fund Special Programs' Institute for International Public Policy (IIPP). IIPP leads a consortium of institutions of higher education and other non-profit organizations whose purpose is to increase the representation of minorities in international affairs and global public policy in the government, private and non-profit sectors. Current Croft students Livia Macias and Anthony Yuen are among former cohorts of prestigious IIPP fellowship recipients. IIPP promotes excellence, international service and cultural competence among a representative cross-section of Americans through a comprehensive program of summer policy institutes, study abroad, intensive language training, internships, graduate study and student services that include mentoring and career development. Congratulations, Kyra and Deneaus!
Croft Alum Jessica Bryant scores internship and grad school - Jessica Bryant, 2007 Croft graduate from Nashville, TN, has been chosen for an internship this summer at the Council on Hemispheric Affairs in Washington, D.C. and will begin an MA in International Affairs at George Washington's Elliott School following in the fall. Way to go, Jessica!
Other Noteworthy Events
Tibetan Monks Construct Mandala Sand Painting in the Ole Miss Student Union – Experience the traditions of an ancient culture as the monks from the Deprung Loseling Monastery visit the University of Mississippi for a week-long residency from April 28 to May 2nd. During their visit, the monks will construct a mandala sand painting, present a lecture on the symbolism of the mandala, and give a performance of ancient temple music and dance in The Mystical Arts of Tibet: Sacred Music, Sacred Dance. There will also be a photo exhibit, Tibet: The magical Land of Spriritual Wonders, at the University Museum.
The mandala construction, the lecture and the photo exhibit are all free of charge. Tickets for the performance of The Mystical Arts of Tibet: Sacred Music, Sacred Dance are $25 and can be purchased at the UM Box Office in the Student Union, at the Ford Center, online at www.olemiss.edu/fordcenter or by calling 662.915.7411. Final International Tea and Coffee Hour this Friday, May 2nd - The final International Tea & Coffee Hour of the year takes place this Friday 2 PM until 4 PM in the Southern Breeze on the fourth floor of the Student Union. Please join us as we say farewell to our friends for the summer. As always there will be free tea, coffee, and snacks, and there will be lots of games and activities available at the tables. The event is open to both Internationals and Americans including all University students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends.
