Greetings from the Mississippi Geographic Alliance!
The Mississippi Geographic Alliance is a network of teachers and geographers who are committed to using geographic content and skills to improve the educational experiences of Mississippi K-12 students. Together, our members are promoting geographic education and awareness among Mississippi teachers, students, and the public. Our programs help educators prepare students to embrace a diverse world, succeed in a global economy, and steward the planet’s resources.
The Mississippi Geographic Alliance (MGA) was created in 1989 with support from the state of Mississippi, the Hardin Foundation, and the National Geographic Society for the purpose of improving geography education in Mississippi. MGA is part of a national network of state Geography Alliances that are supported by the National Geographic Society Education Foundation (NGEF) and operate as grassroots organizations dedicated to promoting geography education across the United States.
The Alliance has embarked on a dynamic resurgence and we’d love to network with you to advance the teaching and learning of geography in the state of Mississippi. With generous and secure funding, a new institutional home and central office, and the strong support of long-time Alliance leaders we have some incredible opportunities. Just as in the past, the Alliance will be able to bring together the community of geography educators and through workshops, institutes, resources, and networking learn from one another and strengthen everybody’s teaching and professional stature. We intend to utilize contacts with state policymakers and education leaders to infuse more geography into the schools. And finally, we’ll be able to reignite and expand the camaraderie among our members that helps nourish and enhance the joy of teaching geography.
If you have not already done so, please complete the Member Information Form (also found on the lefthand menu) by printing and mailing it to us at the address above. This will enable us to update MGA records, gauge interest in upcoming programs, and help us serve you as we re-energize the MGA in order to strengthen geography education in Mississippi.
I really look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Dr. David J. Rutherford
