Croft Visiting Speaker: Towards a Post-Yugoslav European Memory

In a lecture sponsored by the Croft Institute, the Department of Modern Languages, and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Prof. Maria Mayr of the Memorial University of Newfoundland will speak about Europeans' struggle to reconcile competing collective memories.  Dr. Mayr has encouraged students to read an article by Claus Leggewie published in Eurozine on the "Seven Circles of European Memory" to get a better understanding of the events and issues that shape Europe's collective memory. 

Maria Mayr is an assistant professor of German at Memorial University in St. John's Newfoundland, Canada.  She obtained her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Western Ontario in 2011, and has published on the Berlin writings of Emine Sevgi Özdamar, Yoko Tawada, and Terezia Mora and on contemporary German-language literature about the former Yugoslavia.  Her research interests include contemporary German-language literature from former Eastern Europe; notions of German, Austrian, and European identity; and transnational European memory discourses.
