Watch for Information about Mississippi Water Security Institute, run by the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College

From May 16 to 28, 2016, the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College will run the first of three yearly Mississippi Water Security Institutes, funded by the Robert M. Hearin Foundation. Honors students from all majors and from each honors college in Mississippi’s public universities, will be invited to apply for the Institute, to be held on the campus of the University of Mississippi.

The MS Water Security Institute is for smart young people who want to learn about and help solve difficult questions around what is likely to be one of the most critical resource issues of the 21st century – water availability and quality.  Preference will be given to rising sophomores and juniors who can continue their involvement in water security through advanced coursework and/or independent research in their majors.  Participants in the two-week Institute will receive a $1,000 stipend, plus food and lodging.  The Institute will involve travel to target locations, extensive work with community and business leaders, and intensive conversations with peers and visiting experts.  Participants will produce a white paper to be used by local and state leaders who are shaping the State’s commitment to a water-wise future compatible with and supportive of diverse needs.   Interested students (and faculty) are strongly encouraged to talk with Dr. Cliff Ochs, Director of the MS WSI, to learn more about the Institute’s aims (mswsi@olemiss.edu).
