High Mountain Institute Apprentice Program Offers Personal and Professional Growth

Timbah Bell, Associate Dean of the High Mountain Institute (HMI) of Leadville, Colorado and brother of Joe Bell ‘17, will hold an information session this Friday, November 10th, at 3:30pm in Honors College room 331 about HMI’s Apprentice Program.

HMI provides juniors in high school with a semester away from their hometown in an experience akin to a college semester abroad. Over the course of four months, in addition to taking classes, students spend five weeks camping and skiing in the mountains surrounding campus or in the canyons of Utah.  

The High Mountain Institute's Apprentice Program offers college graduates the unique opportunity to explore teaching both traditional academics and wilderness education. As an instructor on multi-week backpacking expeditions and an assistant teacher in a high school classroom, apprentices have the opportunity to positively impact their students while earning invaluable personal experience. Over the course of the semester, apprentices mentor students as a cabin head on the residential campus, lead activities, and collaborate with other apprentices in a graduate-level seminar on pedagogy.
