Visiting Speaker: Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick

Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick is assistant professor of political sociology at the University of San Diego’s Kroc School of Peace Studies and associate professor of social movements and human rights at the University of Nottingham’s School of Sociology and Social Policy, where he is also a principle research at the Rights Lab. His work focuses on culture, politics, technology, and social change. His recent books include What Slaveholders Think (Columbia, 2017) and Protest Tech (forthcoming).

The lecture will focus on his book What Slaveholders Think, examining "how contemporary slaveholders rationalize the subjugation of other human beings, and how they respond when their power is threatened." Why is it that the practice of slavery persists when so much money has been spent on contemporary antislavery efforts?
